Kitchen Notes : Un Hombre Solo on Desilusion Total

Nice discovery from these last week, Un Hombre Solo propose an interesting mix of cold and mechanical moods blended with spanish lyrics. Fernando tells informations on his setup and his production choices, mainly hardware with Elektron boxes at the heart of the system. Expecting a few more informations to come.

Gears and software

What gears/software did you use for Desilusion Total ?

For this album everything was sequenced with either an octatrack or digitakt from elektron, all analog bass sounds came from my modular and a novation bass station, fm from a digitone, drums come from several old roland and kawai machines, and all strings/pads came from a waldorf blofeld as well as an old roland rompler. everything was processed through guitar pedals.

Your favorite gear(s)/software(s) ?

It has to be my modular for sound design and digitakt for sequencing, that combo is just perfect for me.

Any evolution in your setup ?

I always try to keep trying new stuff.
Every time I play a show, I try to change my set up to make it more dynamic and not sound the same all the time, that’s what makes it more fun for me, plus it is always great to have new challenges.

Sound Design

Do you use/tweak presets  ?

Of course, I do both, some of the older rompler sounds are just perfect to me that I don’t have the need to tweak. But when it comes to sound design, I always create and modify stuff, that’s the fun part of working with synths.

Do you design you own sound  ? On which synth/plugin in particular ?

Yes, working with modular synths opened a new door for me when it comes to sound design.

Writing/composing method

What would be your main writing/composing method ? Do you start classical rythm/bassline then arrange around it ? Do you already have structure in mind ? Do you improvise, record sessions then select ? ...

It changes from song to song, but most of the time it starts with either a solid bass line or a drum loop, then the rest comes after. Lyrics are the last step of my composition process

Producing/mixing method

Do you produce/mix in the box or do you use mainly external gears (effect/comp/eq...) ?

I love producing with hardware, since I don’t consider myself handy with daws. I only use ableton to record.

Un Hombre Solo's tips

Work with whatever you have, don’t wait until you have that perfect synth to create stuff.
ideas are more important than any gear.
